Seven Fundamental Considerations for Selecting EMI Filters

Seven Fundamental Considerations for Selecting EMI Filters

Although effective EMI filtering is particularly important in high-reliability electronics applications with low-power signals, strict signal fidelity demands, and a high cost of failure, such as satellites and pacemakers, it also plays a critical role in commercial applications that require sensitivity to low-power signals in noisy environments, like instrumentation equipment. To protect electronic circuits from interference, device designers often employ… Interference Technology October 14, 2020 Check out the featured article on page 17. https://interferencetechnology.com/2020-emc-fundamentals-guide/ MORE ABOUT EMI FILTERS EMI Filtering for High Reliability Applications EMI Filters Catalog

Miniature Bulkhead EMI Filters for Aerospace Applications

Miniature Bulkhead EMI Filters for Aerospace Applications

Advances in multi-layer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) manufacturing have led to significant improvements in the voltage and capacitance capabilities of miniature case size capacitors. These advances have extended to ceramic discoidal capacitors, which are employed in most bulkhead-mounted EMI suppression filters. They are now available in smaller packages and make the control of EMI in space- and weight-constrained aerospace applications easier and more reliable. Currently, discoidal capacitors can be manufactured with outer diameters as small as 0.050” with as much as 5,000pF of capacitance. They also have equivalent models, which helps ensure effective… Signal Integrity Journal October 6, 2020 https://www.signalintegrityjournal.com/blogs/12-fundamentals/post/1894-miniature-bulkhead-emi-filters-for-aerospace-applications

Validating the Long-Term Reliability of Self-Balancing Supercapacitors

Validating the Long-Term Reliability of Self-Balancing Supercapacitors

It should come as no surprise that supercapacitors are becoming increasingly popular among board-level passive components. After all, these energy storage devices exhibit exceptional pulse-power handling capabilities as a result of their extremely high capacitance combined with very low equivalent series resistance (ESR). However, with this growing demand comes an increased need for supercapacitor reliability testing to accurately determine component failure rates, which play a crucial role in eliminating… TechTimes.in August 17, 2020 https://timestech.in/validating-the-long-term-reliability-of-self-balancing-supercapacitors/

Multi-RAT multi-connectivity active steering antenna technology for IoT, Wi-Fi, LTE, and 5G

Multi-RAT multi-connectivity active steering antenna technology for IoT, Wi-Fi, LTE, and 5G

Abstract: This paper presents an active steering antenna system that intuitively beam steers for the best RF signal, achieving ubiquitous coverage and throughput enhancement. The direction of antenna radiation pattern can be arbitrarily rotated in accordance with the passive and active tuning elements. Using 802.11ac Wi-Fi, or Wi-Fi 5 as an example, the authors present a demonstration and experimental result of an active steering antenna feedback system and how it can improve the coverage and throughput. The sensing and control algorithm of the active steering antenna system is applicable for different communication protocols, makes it feasible in a multi radio access technology (RAT), multi connectivity scenario with aggregation of traffic flows from different sources such as IoT, Wi-Fi 6, and

Multilayer varistors in automotive circuit protection

Multilayer varistors in automotive circuit protection

Abstract: Transient voltage suppression (TVS) based on multilayer varistors (MLVs) is designed to prevent damage to sensitive devices and circuits from voltage spikes. The damage to sensors, circuits and electronic components can disable critical functions, rendering a vehicle inoperable until repairs are made. Sources of damaging voltage spikes can include electrostatic discharges (ESD, or static shock), induced secondary voltage from lightning strikes (a high voltage ESD), electromagnetic pulses, voltage surge from motor switching, jump starts, energizing solenoid coil actuators, arcing from faults and load dump from alternator switching. When an electrical circuit or system experiences damaging voltage spikes, a normally off MLV is activated and protects the device by redirecting the spike to ground. Protecting Implantable Medical Devices From Electromagnetic Interference

Protecting Implantable Medical Devices From Electromagnetic Interference

Abstract: The continuous advancement of medical device technology has led to a dramatic increase in the number of implantable devices that utilize onboard electronics. For example, devices used to treat cardiac arrhythmia — including pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) — frequently contain sensors to monitor heartbeats, onboard memory to record that data, processors to determine which therapy is required, and circuitry to generate either electrical impulses or shocks to correct the heart’s operation. In the U.S. alone, more than 300,000 cardiac arrhythmia devices — which include pacemakers and ICDs — are implanted each year. Neurostimulator implants – such as spinal cord stimulators, which are used to treat chronic pain – are also increasing as new products reach the market.
